As on 5/24/08,  we’re on the air in Dillwyn, VA.. many thanks to Gordon Winn (WW4GW) for letting RATS use his tower site for this project.  Next time I’m there I’ll take pictures — what a view!!

40M CW/SSB QRP tranceiver project from May QST

May 26th, 2008

Is anyone interested in building this rig that won the homebrew contest? I read through the article and noted that it can be built on perf board or printed wiring boards designed for the project. My days of building transceivers on perf board are long since past but  the minimum PWB ordering  quantity is two sets for  ~ $100. I really don’t want to build two transceivers so I’m looking for someone to split the cost of a PWB order. I’d even be willing to order a second set of parts for the $50 projected in the article (probably less since I have the microprocessor and several other parts on the shelf.

If you are interested in splitting the cost of this transceiver build, please drop me a line at <my call sign>  at puwaba DOT com

Regards,

George/AI4VJ

Installation Photos - Panier

April 28th, 2008

Panier was almost the “unwanted” site, having no “free electric power” is a major issue to be dealt with.

The solution was a solar system of Kyocera panels, Morningstar Solar controller & AGM deep cycle batteries(2NF style, the only AGM light enough to hoist on a rope)

After 2 site visits for inspection & prep-work, this site went up on December 22nd, 2007.. starting at 10am onsite and leaving at 6pm - with ABSOLUTELY NO TIME TO SPARE before dusk.

The usual suspects, Brad(KI4BWJ), Rob(KG4YJB), <an unnamed helper> and myself.  I’m not mentioning the unnamed helper because I paid him, and I almost dropped on a tool on his head from 200 feet in the air (shh… that was a secret).

Installation Photos - Victoria

April 28th, 2008

The Victoria installation was yet another “great day in amateur radio”.   The day after completing Cauthornville, “yours truly” decided that 1 tower installation was not punishment enough.. So after much coaxing, Rob(KG4YJB), Brad(KI4BWJ) & I trekked to Victoria.  You can see by the picture who was in the air and who was not.

This site is approximately 250′ above ground

Installation Photos - Cauthornville

April 28th, 2008

W4RAT-7 is located in Cauthornville, Virginia at 300′ above ground.

I owe Jay(N9WMU) & Jerry(KJ4IT) thanks for convincing me that I would die attempting this alone.  And then I owe Brad(KI4BWJ) & Rob(KG4YJB) for doing the actual climbing.  I provided on HECK of a ground-crew, but it’s the tower-crew that made it all happen!
